Mayan cities flourished there from 1500 BC to 900 AD. The country was formerly known as British Honduras. British pirates and sailors were the first Europeans to settle there. Territorial disputes between the UK and Guatemala delayed independence until 1981. Guatemala refused to recognize the country as a separate nation until 1992. Tourism has become the mainstay of the economy. The country′s worst problems are high unemployment, growing involvement in the drug trade, and increased urban crime.
